Jayne Abdy, Lead Designer and Production Manager

Joined Wentworth Pewter: 1994 but she’s been helping out since she was a child.

Role: Designs for feature products and bespoke special commissions, artwork for engraving and company logos.

The craft: Sheffield is the home of the metalwork industry and I studied metalwork at Sheffield Hallam University. So working with metal really is in the blood.

Nature, the arts and crafts movement and Sheffield’s heritage – my inspiration comes from many different aspects of life. I love designing a new piece, then seeing it being produced and featured or sold around the world. Some of the technology has changed for engraving and machine cutting for prototyping bespoke products. It means we’re able to combine innovative designs with traditional craftsmanship.

Memberships: Freeman of the City of London and a Freeman of Worshipful Company of Pewterers

Special projects: I designed the peacock collection commissioned by the V&A museum; the Knife, Fork and Spoon collection commissioned by Sheffield Musueums Galleries Trust and features in their permanent collection and the Yorkshire Rose collection commissioned for Sheffield’s Galvanise Festival. I also designed the Made in Sheffield award and won a worldwide competition to design a medal for the Medal Society.

The hallmark of Wentworth Pewter: We’re a family-run business, I think that gives us an edge when it comes to designing and producing handcrafted gifts to mark a special occasion – it’s personal and we really care about what we do.
